CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Early Years Foundation Stage Practice (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage aims to give each child the best possible start in life to help them fulfil their full potential. This means that every child can succeed and no child gets left behind.

From September 2008, the UK Government wants everyone working with children up to five years old to receive training in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Completing the CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Early Years Foundation Stage Practice will show that you have received high-quality training that has been rigorously assessed. On completion you will:

  • understand the context and principles for early years provision.
  • know how to promote children’s development and learning from birth to five years and meet individual needs.
  • know how to promote children’s welfare from birth to five years.
  • Deliver play based activities that encourage creativity and exploration in the delivery of the areas of learning.
  • know and understand relevant aspects of the common core of skills and knowledge as appropriate to Early Years Foundation Stage Practice.

The qualification has been designed to support Early Years practioners, with innovative assessment methods and a detailed course handbook.

Who is the qualification for?

It is for all people working face-to–face with children up to 5 years of age - childminders, crèche workers, workers at nurseries, early years centres, playgroups, pre-schools and schools.

About the qualification

The CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Early Years Foundation Stage is split into three mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 – Context and principles for early years provision
  • Unit 2 – Promoting learning and development in the early years
  • Unit 3 – Promoting children’s welfare in the early years

The teaching and assessment of this qualification integrates the four basic themes of the Early Years Foundation Stage:

  • A Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning and Development

How will I be assessed?

For each unit you will be assessed by the following 3 methods:

  • Assessor observation – assessors will watch your professional practice at your setting.
  • Walk and talk – during the visit you will have the opportunity to explain how your professional practice relates to the units of the course.
  • Reflective task – a written reflective task that lets you celebrate your practice.

Progression from this qualification

This is not a full level 3 qualification; however it will update existing knowledge and experience held by practioners who already have a recognised Level 3 qualification. It may be a valuable route of professional development for practioners at different levels. For example, practioners with a Level 2 qualification may wish to take this award to enhance their professional practice before moving to a full Level 3 qualification.

Taught Sessions

Each of the three mandatory units take on average 60 hours to complete – this includes time spend with your tutor, time spent on practical and private work, assignments and assessments – plus your private study - each unit is taught over 8 weeks of 3 hours sessions. This includes tutorials with your tutor to support your learning. You should be working with under 5's in a school or pre-school setting for a minimum of 150 hours.
